The Swarm and Flocking Starlings

The sinuous undulations and mysterious shapes created by the phenomenon of flocking starlings motivates my current body of work. I’m exploring the visual dynamic of the swarms through a series of drawings and experimentations in space. I am exploring the complexity of the flock by building and layering the material and by varying the mark. This is evident in the pieces Life and Entity. These pieces also consider concepts of time and space, which I frequently observe in the action of the swarms. Beyond the technical approach, I am further exploring my interest in phenomenological thought through consideration of material and visual decisions regarding the forms and density in the drawings. In the piece Teaming Swarm, such secondary concepts are considered by continuing one flock of birds drawn using soft charcoal onto two tattered sheets of paper. The idea of fragility is evident in both materials, as well as the treatment of the drawn image. Works such as Con Tutta Forza and Reverse Inverse consider the space that is created by the flock as well as that which surrounds the flock. Again space and viewer/body relationships are addressed. By cutting into the material and by building the form in 3D space, the viewer has the ability to create those relationships. Referencing found images on google and amateur footage on youtube requires me to apply an imagined sense of what this experience would be like in person, as I have never experienced it personally. In this, I am further considering body, space, and sensual perception to recreate the phenomenon. I am working towards discovering the sense of ‘awe’ that the flocks evoke in those who encounter them to my work.
